Fitted, Not Fixed: The Master Wallers Who Build Britain's Most Honest Structures
There's a wall on the eastern edge of the Peak District that's been standing since before the enclosures. It runs uphill at a slight cant, follows the ridge like it grew there, and hasn't shifted more than a few inches in two centuries. Nobody knows who built it. There's no plaque, no record, no signature. Just stone on stone, fitted so well that the thing has outlasted the farmer who commissioned it, the field system it once divided, and probably several generations of the sheep it was meant to contain.
That's dry stone walling for you. It doesn't ask for credit.
Reading Before You Build
Martin Clegg has been walling in the Pennines for thirty-one years. He doesn't carry a spirit level. He says he doesn't need one — the land tells him what's level, and the stone tells him what fits where. This isn't mysticism. It's pattern recognition built up over decades of handling limestone, gritstone, and everything in between.
"You pick a stone up and you already know roughly where it wants to go," he says, turning a rough chunk of millstone grit in his hands. "It's not magic. It's just that you've picked up so many thousands of them that your hands remember before your brain does."
Before any stone gets placed, Martin walks the line. He's looking at the ground's slope, the frost damage on the existing wall, the way water moves down the field after heavy rain. A dry stone wall isn't just a boundary — it's a drainage system, a windbreak, a habitat, and a record of how the land has been worked. Get the foundation wrong and you'll be back in ten years. Get it right and your great-grandchildren might never need to touch it.
The foundation stones — the footings — are the heaviest, the widest, the most carefully chosen. They go in first, set slightly into the ground, angled fractionally inward on both sides. Everything above them depends on that initial geometry. There's no correcting it later.
The Language Nobody Teaches
Down in the Cotswolds, Ros Attwood learned her trade from her uncle, who learned it from a neighbour, who learned it as a teenager working alongside a man who'd been walling since the 1940s. That's four generations of knowledge passed through proximity and practice, with almost nothing written down.
"The terminology varies from valley to valley," Ros explains, brushing limestone dust from her jacket. "What I call a throughstone, someone in Derbyshire might call a tie. A coping stone up north might be what we call a topper. You work it out from context. You watch what someone does with their hands and you understand."
This localisation of language matters. It means the craft has evolved differently in different landscapes, shaped by the stone available, the climate, the agricultural needs of each region. A Cotswold wall — built from the warm oolitic limestone that crumbles into flat, almost obliging layers — looks nothing like a Lake District wall, where the Borrowdale volcanic rock forces a rougher, more improvised approach. The principles are the same. The execution is entirely different.
Ros now runs informal training days on her family's farm, not as a formal school but as the same kind of shoulder-to-shoulder learning she received herself. She's wary of over-formalising it. "The moment you reduce it to a checklist, you lose something," she says. "It becomes a test rather than a conversation."
The Marches and the Muddle
The Welsh Marches present their own complications. Dafydd Pryce works a stretch of border country in Powys where the stone changes character every few hundred metres — you move from red sandstone to grey shale to something almost blue in the space of a single farm. Each behaves differently under frost. Each demands a slightly different approach to coursing.
Dafydd is also a conservationist, called in to repair walls that sit within scheduled monuments or Sites of Special Scientific Interest. This adds a layer of responsibility that most wallers don't face. He's not just rebuilding — he's making sure that the repair doesn't erase evidence of how the original was constructed. Sometimes that means leaving in a clumsily-placed stone that a previous generation added, because removing it would destroy the record of their intervention.
"A wall isn't just one moment in time," he says. "It's all the moments. Every repair, every collapse, every person who decided to add a gateway or block one up. You're reading all of that when you work on it."
Why It Matters Now
The Dry Stone Walling Association of Great Britain estimates there are around 70,000 miles of dry stone wall in the UK, and a significant portion of it is in poor repair. Skilled wallers are still rare — not because the knowledge has died out entirely, but because it takes years of practice before someone can work efficiently enough to make a living from it. A trained waller can build around three metres of wall per day, working alone. A good day might stretch to four. The economics are brutal.
But there's a quiet resurgence happening. Countryside Stewardship schemes now fund wall restoration, pulling more farmers and landowners into contact with wallers. Young people are turning up at training days in numbers that surprised even Ros. Some come from agricultural backgrounds. Some come from cities, drawn by the appeal of a skill that produces something you can see and touch and lean against.
What they all find, eventually, is the same thing Martin found thirty-one years ago on a hillside in the Pennines: that this craft rewards attention in a way that very little else does. Every stone is different. Every wall is different. The work never quite repeats itself.
You can't fake a dry stone wall. It either stands or it doesn't. And if it stands, it'll probably still be standing long after the person who built it is gone — which is, when you think about it, a fairly extraordinary form of legacy.
